What does the Parish Council do?
Parish councils are responsible for a wide range of local services as well as providing the community with a 'voice' to speak on its behalf.
For many people their first contact with Malpas Parish Council is when they have submitted a planning application.
Although Chester City Council is the planning authority for this area, they always ask the parish council for comments on planning applications in Malpas because we are local people, we know the area well and can represent the views of the community in matters that directly affect local residents - the planning authority must take our comments into account when deciding an application.
But the parish council does a great deal more than this, as well as being responsible for things like seats, litter bins and bus shelters, we play a role in crime prevention and community safety, we have a right to take part in any local public inquiry and to undertake legal proceedings in the interests of the local community. We support and promote the local business community and encourage tourism.
Parish councillors are not paid for the work they do, like all levels of government they are elected by the local community and serve a four year term. The next election will take place in May 2011. Occasionally vacancies occur between elections and these are filled either by a by-election or by co-option by the parish council.
