Preface

The present volume is the second instalment of a Calendar of certain documents selected from the class formerly known as Escheats, or Inquisitions post mortem. It covers the first nineteen years of the reign of Edward I. The text has been prepared by Mr. J. E. E. S. Sharp, an Assistant Record Keeper, and the index by Mr. A. E. Stamp, M.A., of this Office.

Burewardeskote. The manor held of William Gereberd his father, rendering 20 marks yearly to him, and 6 marks to Ralph de Wile … e for the life of the said William, who held part of the manor of the said Ralph, and the rest of the Lady Isabel Patrich, who held of Isabel late the wife of Philip Burnel, of the honour of Malpas (Malo Passu), and she held of the king in chief.
His son (unspecified), aged 4, is his next heir.

Shokelach. The castle, 2 carucates land, a moiety of meadow and woods, 2 watermills, and a ferry called Tholyhate.
Tilston. Land called Yhevill and a fourth part of the advowson of the church.
Dokynton. The manor.
Bradeleg. The manor.
Malpas (Malo passu). A fourth part of the manor, with a moiety of the serjeanty and a fourth part of the advowson of the church.
Barton. 1 carucate land.
Chirton. Land worth 4s. yearly.
Rughe Cristilton. 2 bovates land.
Hom Cristilton. 2s. rent.
Borwardesleg. 2s. rent.
Yeiton. The manor held by service of 2s.
Walefeld. Land worth 20s. yearly.
Oldecastell. A moiety of the wood.
Wevercote. 18d. rent.
A serjeanty of keeping the peace in those parts worth 10 marks yearly, but the serjeants holding that serjeanty ought to follow the lord of Chester beyond the Dee as far as Cloyt at their own costs.
She held the aforesaid lands &c. by service of 1½ knight’s fee; Shokelach by service of finding a judicator at the county (court) of Chester and hundred of Goldebourne; Dokynton by service of finding a suitor at the hundred of Goldebourne; and Yeiton by the aforesaid service, and by service of finding a footman to Peter de Arderne at the castle (castellum) of Aldeford, in time of war at the said Peter’s costs.
Isabel, the wife of Richard de Sutton, age 30, is her next heir.

Hugh de Pulford.

Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Robert son and heir of the said Hugh, that the escheator at the procuration of certain rivals of his, asserting that they were held of the king in chief, had taken into the king’s hand lands, &c. which the said Hugh held of Simon, son of Ralph de Ormesby, 8 Feb. 18 Edw. I.
Chester.

Inq. Saturday after St. Augustine, 18 Edw. I.
Pulford. The manor, excepting 2 bovates land.
Claverton. The manor.
Chester. A messuage.
Wallefilde and Hulm. The homage and service of William de Boydell for his lands, &c. there.
Wardhull. The homage and service of William de Boydell for his lands, &c. there.
All held of Simon son of Ralph de Ormesby, immediately, rendering 5½ marks yearly, and doing for him and his heirs to the lord of Chester in time of war service of 1 knight, according to the custom of the county, finding at each county (court) of Chester a judicator, doing suit at the hundred (court) of the lord of Cestres[cir'] at Goldeburn, drink (potura) for two sheriffs bedels once every 6 weeks, and sheriff’s tooth (scirevestuht).
Pulford. 2 bovates land held of the abbot of Chester rendering 3s. yearly, and finding a judicator at the court of the lord of Cestrescir’ at Nortwic’; all which service he does (sic) for the said Simon.
Bureton. The manor, held of Sir Peter de Ardern’ immediately by homage and service of finding a footman in time of war for guarding his castle of Aldeford at the costs of the said Peter, and doing suit at his court at Aldeford.
Waverton. An eighth part of the manor, held of the fee of William Pigot by service of ½d. yearly, which service the said William assigned to the abbot of Chester, doing, with the other parceners of Waverton, suit at the hundred (court) of the lord of Cestres[cir'] at Goldebourn, and drink for the serjeants of the peace and bedells of the sheriff.
Brex.’ A sixteenth part of the manor.
Aldereseye and Chelleye. An eighth part of the manor.
Both held of the heirs of William Patrik by service of 1/8 knight’s fee, doing suit at the court of Malpas (de malo passu), drink for the serjeants of the said heirs, and work at their castle and mill.
Neweton. A fourth part of the manor, held of Robert the chamberlain (camerario) of Frodesham in free marriage, by service of two barbed arrows yearly.
Robert his son, aged 17½, is his next heir.
