These entries are taken from the Catalogue of all the Ancient Deeds 1915. Here we have reproduced those entries relevant to Malpas. The C before each entry informs us that these are the records of the Court of the Chancery, dealing with matters of equity in law.
PREFACE.
The present volume is the sixth instalment of a Catalogue of all the Ancient Deeds preserved in the Public Record Office. It deals with Nos. 3765 to 8060 of the C Series, consisting of deeds from the Chancery.
The abstracts were made by Mr. J. B. W. Chapman, M.A. and the proofs revised by Messrs. A. S. Maskelyne and H. E. Headlam, all of this department. The Index has been compiled by Mr. J. J. O’Reilly, M.A. also of this Department.

C. 3923. Grant by Philip de Eggerton, esquire, to John son of Roger del Dedwode of a messuage in ‘le Castellone’ of the city of Chester at a yearly rent of 4s. Witnesses:—John Hope, mayor of Chester, Richard Mascy and William Malpas, sheriffs, and others (named). Wednesday after the Epiphany, 9 Henry V. Seal.
C. 3949. Grant by David de Malo Passu to Philip his son, for his homage and service, of three bovates of his demesne in Wiggelaunde, land and wood in Pilatenhalewh’ and Wychalewh’, and one-fourth of a free salt spring in Upper Wych; held of the house of St. Wereburga, Chester; rendering therefore to him and his heirs at Midsummer gilt spurs or 6d., for all service. Witnesses:—Sir H. abbot of Chester Philip de Orreb’, justice of Chester, Henry de Aldithel’, and others (named). Seal.
C. 4021. Grant by Sir John de Sutton, lord of Malpas, to Uryen de Egerton for life of the keepership (garde) of the serjeanty of the barony of Malpas, which David del Malpas had before, at a yearly rent of 6li.; the said Uryen has found eight sureties (named), &c. Soghlache, Sunday before the Purification, 17 Edward II. French.
C. 4043. Grant by Philip son of Eingnon de Malo Passu to David son of Philip de Malo Passu, for his homage and service and for four marks before hand, of a salt spring and salt belonging thereto in Over Wich (Superiore Wicho) at a yearly rent of a pair of white gloves due on the feast of St. Oswald the king. Witnesses:—William de Malo Passu, David his brother, Kenewirech son of Alexander, Tudir son of Hugh, and others (named). Seal with legend, SIgill’ philippi mal’.
C. 4116. Grant by Philip de Eggerton, lord of Eggerton, to John Lyttullore, chaplain, of all his messuages, lands, rents, and services in Malpas, Aggeton, Wyggelond, Masfen, Bykerton, Newton, and Tussyncham, with a moiety of his lands, salterns, and brine-springs in Over and Nether Fulwych. Eggerton, Monday after St. Oswald the King, 9 Henry V. Seal.
C. 4153. Award by William Stanley, knight, Piers of Werburton, esquire, and David Ferour as arbitrators between Randolph Brereton, knight, Thomas Bailly, Randolph son of Urian of Brereton, and Elyn wife of the said Thomas on the one part, and Philip Eggerton, esquire, on the other, bound to each other in 1000 marks to stand to their award, touching the manors, &c. which sometime were of John of the Malpas of Hampton viz. that Sir Randolph and the others shall suffer Philip to have for life the site of the manor of Hampton, with Hampton Wood, the Shawe, a cottage appertaining thereto, lands called ‘the Milne Filde, Pudwall Filde, Bristull Crofte, Marleruse Filde, White Medowes, Danshawe Filde, Benettes Fiide, Cokeshote Filde, Cromburley More, and the Hall More,’ two tenements and chief rents in Hampton, the hall of Bykerton with the adjoining land, divers messuages and land in Bikerton held of the said Philip, and chief rents and a field in Bikerton and Eggerton called the Four Acres; that the said Philip shall pay 53s. 4d. yearly during his life to the said Elyn and Randolph and the longer liver of them; and that the said Thomas, Elen, and Randolph son of Urian shall occupy during their lives, without in- terruption of the said Philip all other lands, manors, rents, and services that at any time were of John of the Malpas or of any persons to his use. 11 December, 6 Edward IV. C. 4166. Certificate by John Maynwaring and John Bromley, knights, and John Dutton of Hatton, that Master Richard Pleymunde- stowe came before them at Chester and testified that the instrument to this certificate annexed was made by him without compulsion viz. that Jonet wife of John Malpas declared when lying at the point of death that Elyn and Katerine her daughters were not the daughters of the said John, but begotten in adultery by another person. C. 4223. Grant by Richard le Fleccher, rector of Haselwall, and John Thikkenes to John son of Philip de Eggerton of a fourth part of the manor of Hampton and a fourth part of all the land, &c. in the county of Chester which together with William le Baxter, rector of the mediety of the church of Malpas, Richard Massy del Hogh, Hugh de Malpas of Chekley, John de Kynaston and Philip Fylkyn, since deceased, they had by the gift of John son of David de Malpas. Saturday after St. Ambrose, 15 Henry VI. Two seals, damaged.
C. 4338. Grant by William son of Hugh de Chydelowe to William son of Urian de Eggerton, of a place of land in Chydelowe, called ‘le Espenfeld,’ with a road therefrom to the road from Malpas to Whit- church (Album Monasterium). Tuesday before St. Valentine, 1329. Fragment of seal.

C. 6256. Indenture being a demise by Walter Cokeseye, knight, and Isabel his wife to Ralph de Eggerton of a toft and curtilage by the church of Schokelach in Chirchescheschokelach (sic) for 29 years; rent, 1d. at Midsummer. Malpas, Wednesday after St. Margaret, 4 Richard II. French. Seal of arms and fragment.
C. 6301. Demise by John de Sutton, lord of Malpas, to Ralph de Eggerton, of all his share of demesne land in his hands in the towns of Schyrcheschokeche and Caldocode for 12 years from Ascension Day, 8 Richard II; rent, 4 marks, saving to him one chief [beast ?] of the said Ralph if he shall die within the term. Dated at Chirche- schokelach as above. Seal.
C. 6306. Quitclaim by Peter son of William de Huggemor to William son and heir of Ralph de Eggerton of his right in all the messuages, lands, &c. late of Richard son of Philip son of Robert de Farnedon, which Ralph had by his gift. Witnesses:—David del Malpas and others (named). Farnedon, Saturday after St. Agnes, 3 Henry V.
C. 6323. Grant of the same date by the said Mabel to the said William of a rent of 4d. out of her share of a rent of 12d. payable by the heirs of the lords of Malpas (de Malo Passu) for Bunlee Wood. Seal, damaged.
C. 6324. Grant by William de Malpas (de Malo Passu) to Robert de Stotevill of freedom from providing food (putura) for servants, work on castles and mills, and all other services due to him for all the lands which Robert bought from Richard the marshal in Barton or otherwise held of him, or which he held in Barton in the year 1236. For this Robert has granted him his right in land in Bonileg on the side nearest to Shokelach of a watercourse which runs between Bonileg and Horton. Robert to receive therefor a rent of 12d. at the feast of St. Oswald the King. Seal in white wax, damaged.
C. 6689. Grant by Joan Grymelon to Hugh Malpas, rector of Malpas, and William Wenlok of all her lands in Alghynton. Wit- nesses:—John Pulford, rector of Yghtfeld, and others (named). Monday, the feast of St. Hilary. 22 Richard II.

Letters of David de Malpas and Hugh de Malpas, clerk, appointing Richard Streche, William de Puleston, and David de Masseie their attorneys, to receive 38 marks 11s. 10d. from William de Williley, 6 marks 8s. 11d. from Thomas Pryde, and 14 marks 5s. 11d. from William de Birynton, and to give receipts therefor. C. 6703. Grant by Roger de Malpas to John de Bikerton, William Mullok, and David de Bekeley, of all his lands, etc. which he has within the county by the gift of David, son of David de Malpas. Michaelmas Day, 2 Richard II. Seal of arms (Malpas).
C. 6705. Grant by John, son of David de Malepas, to William Baxster, rector of half the church of Malepas, Richard Fleccher, rector of Hasulwall, Richard Mascy del Hogh, Hugh Malepas, of Chatkeley, John Kynaston, John Thikkenes, and Philip Filkyn, of all his lands, etc. in the county. Letters of Richard Flechier, rector of Haselwall, and John Thyknys appointing John Ithell their attorney to deliver to Elizabeth, daughter of David del Malpas, John Eggerton, Katherine, Margaret, Alice, and Agnes, daughters and heirs of John Bryde and of Katherine, daughter of David de Malpas, and to Thomas Hogh, seisin of all the lands, etc. which they had by the gift of John, son of David del Malpas, within the county. C. 6708. Grant by William Baxster and others (as in C. 6705) to David son of John de Malpas, Alice his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, of all the lands, etc. which they had by John’s gift in Newbolde, Newton, Rowton, Aldresey, and Broxun. C. 6778. Indenture of agreement between Gryffyt le Warrayn and David, de Malpas as to the terms of the settlements on the marriages intended to take place between John, son and heir of Gryffyt, and Margaret, daughter of David, and between William, son and heir of David, and Agnes, daughter of Gryffyt. Monday before Martinmas, 8 Richard II. French. Seal marked W.B.
C. 6779. Chirograph, indented, being a defeasance of a bond given by Urian de Eggerton to William son of Hugh de Chydelowe, the bond to be void if Philip, son of Urian and Margery, daughter of William, after reaching the age of 21 years, shall leave William undisturbed, during his life, in possession of lands which he holds on a seven years’ lease of David de Eggerton. Malpas, Sunday after the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, 10 Edward III. French. Seal in white wax, damaged.
C. 6782. Indenture of demise by John, son of William de Wig- gelond, and John, his son, to Hugh, son of William de Malpas, of all their lands and messuages in Aggeton, which descended to the said John, the elder, at the death of Alice de Wiggelond, his mother, with common of pasture and ‘tacfre’ in his wastes in Aggeton, to hold for eleven years from the feast of St. Michael in monte Tumba, 1347; rent, a pair of white gloves; provision against alienation to men of religion or magnates. And if Hugh die within the term, he shall pay 6d. as a payment due at death (principalium), and shall himself receive like dues on the deaths of other tenants. Indenture, dated 13 October, 9 Henry VIII., witnessing that [Edmund Audley], bishop of Salisbury, Sir Richard Cholmundeley, knight, Master Edward Molyneux, parson of Sefton, Ralph Larden, vicar of . . ., Richard Williamson, priest, John Brereton, clerk, Richard Leftwiche, Richard Hassall, and Gilbert Dutton, feoffees of the lands of Richard Cholmundeley, deceased, have demised to Elizabeth, late the wife of the said Richard Cholmundeley, for her life, for her dower, the manor of Capenhurst and all messuages, lands, &c, there and in Chorley, Malpas, Egge, Larton, and Bikerton (except a windmill in Capenhurst), two messuages and all lands, &c, in Cholmundeley in the tenure of Henry and Robert Tomlynson of the More, the third part of the ‘falling woods’ of Birtle, a water called ‘Okmere’ with the fishing, and 40 cartloads of turf from Cholmundeley moss; Elizabeth to retain her dower-rights in lands in Churchemyns- hull and Routon, and to have a lease of the manor of Cholmundeley for six years at a yearly rent of 21l. 6s. 4d., of which she is to retain 16l. 13s. 4d. for the maintenance of Richard’s children. Bill, indented, being a declaration by John Warberton, knight for the body of the king, sheriff of Chester, that he has assigned to Eleanor, late the wife of John Eggerton, esquire, the manor of Newbold Astbury, four saltworks in Nantwich, a messuage and land in Farndon, and various yearly rents, as her dower in respect of messuages, lands, etc. in the said places and in Smalwode, Wistanston, Chirche Shokelache, Shokelache Ovyet, Caldecot, Crue, Neuton by Malpas, Haselwell, Calday, Great Calday, Spurstowe, Halghton, Chatkylegh with Wrymhull, Bryddesmere, and Pykemere. 30 May, 10 Henry VIII.
